Hi, I had changed my settings to "let me choose what updates to download and
install" because my landline connection is so slow so I then unticked a lot
of them with the intention of downloading them later when I have broadband.
Now I can't work out how to find them again - they're no longer on my list of
pending updates. I didn't "hide" them, just took the tick out and installed a
few ones that were left each time. Can I get my laptop to look for them
somewhere again? Thanks for helping.

Which edition of Windows and what Service Pack level is it now at ?

IF you remember the date this was done, then check the WindowsUpdate.log
for that *specific* date to see if the updates were hidden or are really
missing.
It's located in the WINDOWS directory [folder] and the most recent
entries are towards the bottom of the log.
