Can I cancel a download of Windows update?

Help!

I have automatic updates set to notify me when an update is available. It
used to be that it would tell me then I could choose which ones I wanted to
update. Now I clicked on it and it started downloading the SP2 update.
With my slow and expensive dialup connection it will take 750 hours and cost
me $750. There used to be an option to pause when I held the cursor on the
little icon at the bottom right of my screen, but now that is gone.

Is there any way to cancel the download? I will install it from a CD.

Thanks,

David

Stop the Automatic Updates Service.

Click Start, Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

Click OK.

Right-click the Automatic Updates service.

Select Properties.

Under Service status, click Stop.

Click OK

Suggest that you also clean out the temporary download folder:
Click Start, select run
Type in: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\
Delete the contents of both the DataStore, EventCache and Download folders.

You will lose your WUv5 History listing - but that's not important.

Once you have installed SP2 from the CD

Start the Automatic Updates Service

Click Start, Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

Click OK.

Right-click the Automatic Updates service.

Select Properties.

Under Service status, click Start.

Click OK.

Thank you -- a perfect response to a flawed question. I apologize for my
late night failure of arithmetic. I should have said the download will take
750 minutes, not hours! But it was still annoying that I could find no way
to stop the download. And to top it all off, because the download was
taking so much of my very limited bandwidth, it was hard to send and
received messages.

But your response solved the problem.
