How can I change file permissions en masse?

I placed the hard drive from a defunct XP computer and enclosure into my new
enclosure and attached it to my new Vista computer. Some of the files on the
XP drive were set as hidden. With Vista I am unable to see or edit those
files unless I reset the permissions individually to make myself the owner
(Properties -> Security -> Add...). But I have hundreds of files that need
such changing and need to find a way to reset the permissions for them as a
group.

I've tried to set permissions for their folder but I got a warning that I
have to change their inheritance, but the inheritance checkbox is grayed
out. Any assistance on this issue appreciated. Thanks.
