How can I create an integrated Vista SP1 installation disk?

I have the regular Vista installation DVD, and I have downloaded the full SP1
file (which I installed, BTW). How can I create a "slipstreamed" Vista SP1
installation DVD (equivalent to what was possible with XP)?

You can't - well you can but its rather complex and requires you to install
Vista on a separate partition. As far as I know none of the usual slipstream
software will slipstream SP1 to Vista - unless, of course, someone has found
software that will do it.

Thanks for your reply. Alternatively, is there, or will there soon be, a
possibility for the average Joe to download a DVD image with SP1 already
integrated? I know for a fact that it's possible, since such an image is
available on MSDN, according to a friend who has access to a subscription.
Otherwise, where can I find the detailed instructions for the "complex"
process you allude to? I can make room for an install partition on one of my
disks if need be.

Do you know about Windows Vista Customizer
"vLite-1.1.rc.installer.exe"?
Or vLite-1.1.beta2.installer.exe?

just made an updated disk with vlite incorporating the sp1 in to the
new install dvd works great

As far as I know Microsoft are not making slipstreamed copies available to
the general public. Yes they do exist, but they are mainly being used by
OEM's and, of course, retail copies purchased from new.

I haven't tried vlite recently as the other posters have suggested, I'll
have to take another look at it. The last time I looked at vlite it had some
issues with slipstreaming vista.

I have been using a slipstreamed version (created with vlite) for about
2 months and have no problems with it.

I'm quite aware of vLite, and I've used it several times to create
installation disks containing all current Windows fixes and the drivers for
my hardware. However, I'm not ready to use a beta process to create a disk
that could possibly create problems down the road. For example, a modified
installation (with defaults overridden or features disabled) cannot be
updated to SP1 with Windows Update... Who knows what updates would be missed
with a "slipstreamed" install created by vLite? I can probably live with
this uncertainty, but my clients most certainly cannot.

In fact I can use a virtual machine with the appropriate "partitioning" to
create the slipstream, which will save me a repartitioning of my current
drives. The process is a bit longer than just downloading a pre-slipstreamed
ISO image, but it will still save me some time when I need to reinstall to
several machines. Some of my clients insist on downloading and installing
all kinds of crap... ;o)

I've used vLite several times, mostly to include Windows hotfixes and
drivers and save time on a reinstall.
