Hi everyone!
In my "Add or Remove Programs"
I have about 10 "Windows XP Hotfix SP2" that take up
(each one takes up) 72.93 MB of space on my Hard Drive.
Thats 729.30 MB of space for these "Hotfixes (SP2)".
There is also a "Windows XP Service Pack 1" that in there
that also takes up 72.93 MB of space.
I have only 2% of space left on my Hard Drive.
My Question: Can I "do away" or delete all of
these "Hotfixes" and the "Windows XP Service Pack 1" and
tjen just download the NEW Windows XP Service Pack 2 that
just came out?
I really need to free up some space on my Hard Drive!!
Thanks for any and all info!

Normally you don't need to remove SP1 and all the other pre-SP2
critical/security updates before installing SP2. Just go ahead to download
and install SP2. SP2 will scan your system and install those parts you
don't yet have to make up a complete SP2, appropriate for your system, on
your hard disc.

In your case, you want to delete SP1 and the pre-SP2 updates on your drive
partition, presumably because there is not enough unoccupied space on that
drive partition for the SP2 download-and-install procedure. The SP2
download-and-install procedure requires at least 1.8GB free space, much of
that as 'elbow room'. Certainly, you can remove SP1 and the pre-SP2 updates
before SP2 download and install. Just be sure after the deletion, there is
at least 1.8GB free, unoccupied space on that drive partition.

If that is not enough, I am afraid you have to buy a larger capacity hard
disc drive!

Hi

Those MB size numbers are bogus, the size indications in Add/Remove
Programs are not to be trusted. Usually a hotfix's uninstall folder
is between 1 to 9 MB.

SP1's uninstall files take a lot of space, so I recommend you delete
the folder %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\ to regain this space
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows). You might need to turn on
"Show hidden files and folders" to see this folder.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (e.g. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm

Note: Doug's program only removes the uninstall files and Hotfix
entries in the Add/Remove Programs listing. It does not remove the
actual updates.

Also, you should clean out this folder now and then (WU5's temporary
download folder):

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\
