Updates will successfully download, but when they try to install there is no
movement of the "progress bar", and after a while, the message xxxx "failed
to install". There is no error code given, either in the screen or in the
update log.

I have tried all of the suggested fixes in the Knowledge Base, including:
renaming the edb.log file;
confirming that the Cryptographic Services were correctly set;
renaming the Catroot2 folder;
re-registering the dll files;
removing the hidden attribute from %windir%;
setting the non-driver signing policy;
manually installing the "Trusted" certificates;
manually checking all the certificates.

I have also tried manually downloading the updates individually and
installing them while running in Safe Mode.

I'm running XP Professional on a P4 3.6 with 2 GB RAM and 160 GB of free
drive space. Note - updates used to work fine. The first failure error
occured a few weeks ago, after which it successfully installed one more
(different) update, and since then no updates will install, though all will
still download without problem.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi Ken,

Probably this is a problem width the registration of MSXML3.DLL in pre
Instaled systems
Try Register MSXML3.DLL and see if it helps

- Choose Run From Start Menu
- In the Run box, type:

%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\MSXML3.DLL

Click OK.
good luck.
