can i dual boot xp and vista

i need xp and vista for a course. Can i buy a vista machine and partition it
to load xp as well? If not can i buy a vista, wipe the o/s and do a clean
instalation of xp? or can i buy a portable hard drive big enough to load xp
on it and run it with the USB with a vista machine when i need xp? HELP.

Yes, you can dual boot Windows XP and Windows vista.
Generally you need to install older operating system first.
Both operating systems need to be installed on their own partition.

3rd party partitioning programs can help.
