How can I force IE8 to always play .m4a files with WMP instead of

I'm running Win7 x64.

Prior to QuickTime being installed, .m4a files would open up in WMP when I'm
using IE8, which is my preference. Also, outside of IE, for example in
Windows Explorer, double-clicking on a .m4a file also opens up WMP, per my
association default.

But as soon as I install QuickTime--even though the default for .m4a is
still set to WMP--in IE8 the .m4a file is now opening up with the QuickTime
browser plugin! Windows Explorer is still fine and it opens up the file
with WMP, but only IE is using the wrong default program.

How can I change the default program association for .m4a audio files in IE?

Thanks!

Internet Explorer is not a media player. It calls the default media
player registered in Windows. Therefore, go back check your defaults.

You might try disabling the MIME Type association for "MPEG-4 Media" files
in Quicktime Preferences. This can be done during the Quicktime Player
installation process or any time after it's installed.

Go to:

Edit||Preferences||Quicktime Preferences...||Browser(tab)||Mime Settings...

Under the "MPEG" section, remove the checkmark for "MPEG-4 Media".

Good luck,

I am fully aware that IE8 is a browser, not a media player. But per my
original post, I don't need to check my defaults because the default
associations works fine from Windows File Explorer when I double-click the
same .m4a file.

Hi Donald, in Win 7, when I click on the "MIME Settings..." button, it takes
me to the standard Windows "Set associations for a program" screen, where you
set file type associations. There is no 'MPEG' section. The "File Types..."
button does the same thing.

Sorry, I have no idea about how Quicktime might work with-in Windows 7. The
instructions I gave you work with Windows XP. You might ask your question
in a Windows 7 specific newsgroup, or Quicktime newsgroup.

Why do you think you need the Quicktime Player installed on Windows 7?

From what I've read about Windows 7 it now contains native support for the
..mov file type:
http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/200...ince-beta.aspx

"We've since added support for Windows Media Player to natively support the
..MOV files used to capture video for many common digital cameras. "

Given that Windows Media Player now supports .mov files I don't see any
reason to install the Quicktime Player on Windows 7.

Good luck,

Donald Anadell
