How can I force WindowsUpdate components to be reinstalled

I've wasted 2 whole days trying to get Windows Update to work and I'm now in
a complete pickle.

I get as far as "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." and
then it sits there forever with the dreaded green progress bar teasing me
with the promise of delivering the goods.

This is a Win XP Pro SP2 system, recently (2 days ago) upgraded from W2K
Pro. The upgrade went smoothly, and when I first went into Windows Update -
it appeared to start working as expected, but then some sort of hang
occurred. The Yellow systray icon was sitting at 81% when the WU selected
file downloads window appeared. I pressed the cancel button at that point -
as I'd only just noticed the Systray icon - and it's not worked sensibly
since then.

So - Please! - how do I remove WindowsUpdate completely and then reinstall it?

Could some kind person help me out?

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm pretty sure I've been through all of these
things already - hence two wasted days!

Is there no way to completely delete and reinstall WindowsUpdate from
scratch?

Currently I don't get an error message on the web page and the log shows no
error that I can see.

And the green progress bar still just sits there ........

Launch Internet Explorer and from the Toolbar select:
Tools > Internet Options > General > Settings... >
View Objects. Look for "WUWebControl Class",
right-click on it and select "Remove".

OK. I'm seriously confused! The WUWebControl Class is not shown there (Guess
I should have seen your reply coming...) as I deleted it an hour ago,
presuming it would get reinstalled. And yet when I Start/Windows Update, IE
goes through the "checking for latest version" page, and ends up on the "Keep
your computer up to date" page, without installing anything. If I then press
Express or Custom, I get to the dreaded green progress bar.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
