Hello Brandy,
Which version of Windows does your friend have (and if on Windows 2000 or Windows XP, which service pack is the system on).?
Have your friend do this. From Start menu, select RUN, then type in
WINVER <Enter-key>
There will be a long display of Version number
what does your Windows Version show?
And if it's Windows XP, what does build number show as ?
(that l-o-n-g string Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
Does the build string show service pack 1 or service pack 2?
{similarly, Windows 2000 should show a service pack level ---- currently service pack 4}
Any Windows XP ought to be at service pack 2.
This is the link for the Microsoft Download Center. You can get one or more updates, download & save, and copy to CD / DVD (using your local-pc-software-utility).

Generally speaking here is the order in which to get updates (since there's likely no one single file to update everything):
A) Service pack or update rollup
B) most recent Internet Explorer cumulative update
C) Critical updates
D) Security updates
