I can hear music with other players, but not WMP

I just got a Logitech Z313 2.1 speaker system, and I can hear music using
Real Player and iTunes, but not with Media Player. I'm using Media Player
11.0.5721.5268 with Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3, on
a Dell Optiplex GX620 computer with SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.

I can see that Media Player is playing, I just can't hear anything. I've
searched the internet for solutions, and I've tried every one I can find,
including making sure no mute buttons are checked, making sure that all
speaker volumes are turned up, and changing the speaker settings to stereo
desktop speakers (no setting for a 2.1 systems) in Sounds and Audio Devices
in my Control Panel, re-installing WMP, and going through all the
troubleshooting wizard procedures I can, but I still can't figure out the
problem. I've also tried to reconnect the soundbar that came with this Dell
computer, but I still can't hear WMP. Again, there are no error messages. I
just see the sound level display for WMP, and the time lapsing, which
indicates to me that the song file is being played, when I try to play a song.

I'm sure I've tried other solutions, but nothing has worked so far, and I
would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks

Try this...

Open WMP, go to Tools -> Options

Go to the Devices tab. You should see a Speakers device. Select it and press
properties. It will give you a list of where WMP is playing, select your
speaksers from this list, click OK and that should make a difference.

Let me know how you get on,

Wayne, I've selected everything from "desktop stereo speakers" to "7.1 home
theater speakers" and I still can't hear anything. And there is no "2.1
stereo speakers" choice, which this system is. But the old system was also a
Logitech 2.1 system, but not as powerful as this one, but with that system, I
just plugged everything in and it worked. And the only difference between
that system and the new one, besides the power, is that the old system
plugged into the computer via the "speaker" jack on the back of it, whereas,
the new one plugs into the computer via the "headphones" jack on the front of
my computer. But like I also wrote, I've tried reconnecting the soundbar, and
that too doesn't work. But thanks for your help.

..
First step the basics:
Open Windows Media Player. On the lower task bar of WMP
ensure you have the volume control slider set to max (full to the right)
If you cannot see the volume slider in WMP, then right click
and select "Full Mode"
With WMP in full mode, click "Tools"
then select "Options "
In the ensuing dialog select the "File Types" tab.
Ensure the file types you are playing are listed and the checkbox
is ticked, if you have to tick any, ensure you Click "Apply" button
Then the "OK" button.
Then click the "Devices" tab
In the devices list, scroll and click once to highlight "Speakers"
Then click the "Properties" button
In the "Audio device to use" drop down, ensure you have selected
the correct device.
Then click the "Player" tab and ensure you have selected:
"Download codecs automatically"

Tulsa, with all respect, you didn't even try what he asked...He didn't tell
you to go back to your control panel and select stereo speakers (which you
had already indicated hadn't made a difference). If you re-read his
suggestion, you'll see he's talking about something completely different.
What he's indicating is that WMP might be outputting to the incorrect audio
device. That is, it might be set to do digital SPDIF output and not analog
output to your speakers.

Your response shows that you were still thinking of the control panel
settings. If you're gonna ask people for help, at least read their responses
carefully
