Can I install VPC 2007 side by side with Windows Virtual PC under Windows 7?

Hi folks!

I'm currently running Windows 7 RC (the 32 bit flavour). I've downloaded
and installed Windows Virtual PC. It works fine with the XP, you can also
dowload from Microsoft for testing the XP-mode under Windows 7. How-
ever, apparently the integration features refuse to install on a Win 98 VM
that was created using VPC 2007 (which is running under XP, this is a dual-
boot machine) and which I'd like to get running under Windows 7.

Can I therefore install VPC 2007 under Windows 7, in parallel to Windows
Virtual PC, or am I asking for trouble? It's not that I'm hesitating to test
al-
most everything on tis rig, but if I knew beforehand it just wouldn't work,
why wasting time.

You need to keep using the VM Additions from the older version of VPC.
There are no WVPC integration components for older OSes. You can
grab the Win98 Additions from my website, just reinstall.

Hi Steve!
Are you saying that I install the additions while the VM is operated
under VPC 2007 (under XP) and then just fire up this VM under
WVPC? Upon startup, WVPC always tries to start the integration fea-
tures (IFs) and tells me that this attempt failed. Can I just ignore that
or is there a way to tell WVPC not to try to initiate the IFs?

You can do that, or you can install them right in WVPC,

Download the additions from Steve's page, fire up the VM and attach
the additions ISO to it and install from there.

If you go into the settings for that VM, Click on "Integration
features" on the left, then just uncheck "Enable on startup". Then it
wont try to do that again.

Thanx to you both! Great site BTW, Steve. Haven't looked through all
of your stuff there. Besides installing Windows 7 (32 bit), I also instal-
led the 64 bit flavour, but into a VHD. The procedure (utilizing Diskpart)
ist described at several places on the net and worked very well here. As
I understand it, you need a CPU that supports Virtualization Technology,
but - to my best knowledge! - both, AMD and Intel are supported. Sounds
very appealing since you do no "bad" to your hdd or folder structure,
you just have to take care for the boot loader thingi. Of course, you have
to reboot in order to play with another installation, so no real alternative
in terms of the convenience you have with a true virtual environment.
But at least a huge improvement, since the OS sees the real hardware
(and it's performance). I'm very curious reg. the future of OS handling.
