I am asking for a friend that can no longer get and stay on the internet.
She installed LIVE on a xpsp1 pro edition pc. I then proceeded to start
install all the windows updates via the manual express search. (they had
never been done as I had a land line connection and now I have Cox service).
the first 50 download started to install and about the 23 rd one the
connection was lost. Now, after rebooting (live starts at boot up) when I
get on the internet, I am kicked off after about 3-5 minutes. Coule LIVE
have anything to do with my problem-I was thinking that LIVE technology was
not compatible with the old SP1 and/or one of the updates that was trying to
install. Cable says nothing is wrong and Dell did a diognostic and of course
says it is Cable..Any help is appreciated.

Being that your connection was dropped while you were trying to download and
install some 50 updates tells me that WLM is not the cause of your dropped
connection. Is your friend on a wireless connection? Check to see if there
are any updated drivers for her wireless connection at the manufacturers
website. Download and install the new driver then go back to the Windows
Update site and let it proceed to update the system. For security purposes,
you should definitely install SP2.

thank you..no she is now on Cox digital internet dsl (I think that is the
term). Cox told her this AM to remove McAfee and use their antivirus (which
has a bad rep) but that seemed to stop the intermittant cutting off of the
internet connection for now. so now, I told her to go back into windows
updates manually and no matter where she was, to do a custom search for
updates and look for sp2 and install that first because I was told it will
include many updates done prior to that. then should she go back into the
manual search and again do an search -express- and install all she finds and
keep going back until there are no updates to be installed and let her
automatic update take her from here?

OK, she has a DSL connection...is her computer a laptop or desktop? The
reason I ask is because if she's using a laptop the wireless card driver may
need to be updated...thus the reason for the dropped connection. I think
SP2 will be available for download and install after she installs all the
high-priority updates. You advised her well to keep going back to the
Windows Update site until there are no more security updates to be
installed.

It is a desktop PC....does she have to worry about turning off the cox
antivirus or do the updates turn off what needs to be turned off? I do not
know how to turn them off if need be--

When downloading and installing updates from the Windows Update page, I have
never had to disable my AntiVirus.

Before installing SP2 you may be prompted to disable your AntiVirus. If she
does not know how, have her contact Cox.
