Can no longer do windows updates after installation of WGA

I've got a laptop that passed the genuine advantage web based validation. I
then went to do updates through the update site. The system pushed
WGA to my laptop and installed it successfully (since I got the
congratulations
notice).

Subsequently, whenever I go to the update site, IE's display bar shows
little activity. I've let the thing sit for over 6 hours to no avail. The
end result is that I can not do any updates.

I've got other XP machines that can access the update site during the same
period that this one laptop is stalled.

Any ideas/suggestions on what is going on.

Do a little housekeeping such as clearing the Temporary
Internet File folder, removing cookies, defragging the
HD, and checking that there is at least 25% free space
on the HD. And, of course, if no update is needed, then
there will be very little activity.

It is unclear to me how the suggested general management techniques
specifically address the issue I raised - the fact that the update website
does not respond once the pushed WGA patch has been installed.

Well, you could restore to before you applied WGA, then go to
shavlik.com and download their NetChk program and get your updates
from them instead.

Or, if you can see the list of updates for your machine, download them
manually and save them. Then restore to before you installed WGA.
Then apply the updates.

You could try what I'm doing: Use Shavlik.com for updates and avoid
the MS update site. I downloaded shavlik's program and have scanned,
identified needed updates, downloaded them, and then installed them.
Shavlik can install them automatically if you like. Shavlik created
the MS Security Baseline Analysis program; it's a reputable site,
mainly designed for commercial users, but free for users with under 10
PC's.
