I am Windows XP (not yet SP2)
with ZoneAlarm (actually Integrity Client)

I am seeing an 'object' in the tray, that when I 'hover' over it, always
says"Downloading Updates: 0%"

However the last entries in
"C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.t xt are:
{CB0FA1CD-2872-4EBA-839F-0B8F25C3E888} 81 2004-09-25 18:08:26-0400 1 147 101
{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 0 AutomaticUpdates Success Software
Synchronization Agent has finished detecting items.
{4388B972-F327-421B-8AB2-2873395A7533} 82 2004-09-26 14:12:13-0400 1 147 101
{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 0 AutomaticUpdates Success Software
Synchronization Agent has finished detecting items.

BUT.....
the last events in C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log are

What concerns me is the repetive pattern of lines beginning with "Send
failed with hr = 80072ee7." and ending with "DM: Refresh failed with
0x8024402c."

Is this normal?

The other thing 'odd' is that I have never been 'offered' SP2.. not that I
want it 'yet'...(I do want it in 1Q05) ...But I thought at least now, it
would have been 'pushed' to me too!

Also ,the 'manual' Windows update shows everything is current

Any insights would be appreciated!!!

Hi

Error 0x8024402c is

WU_E_PT_WINHTTP_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED
Winhttp SendRequest/ReceiveResponse failed with 0x2ee7 error. Either
the proxy server or target server name can not be resolved.
Corresponding to ERROR_WINHTTP_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED.

Error 0x80072EE7 is

ERROR_INTERNET_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED
The server name could not be resolved.

If you are behind a Microsoft ISA, this one might be relevant:

XP Windows Update Error 0x8024402C / 0x80072f78 when behind a
Microsoft ISA server
http://www.electrosonics.net/technot...0x8024402C.htm

If the above is not relevant, here are some other things to try:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=26&ln=en

You might need to use proxycfg.exe (see link above) to either set
or remove a proxy server configuration:

Open a command prompt (Start/Run and then "cmd.exe" without the
quotes").

Run this command to see what proxy configuration WU uses:

proxycfg

If you don't have a proxy, you will need status

Direct access (no proxy server).

If it reports anything else, to set direct access:

proxycfg -d

To get more help on proxycfg:

proxycfg -?

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site,
you see the 0x80072EE7 error

and

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error.

Thanks.... tried and investigate all these... no help....
(FYI..Windows Update was working)

Then I tried and 'old trick' from the past..

1) When to "Control Panel", then "Automatic Updates", and turned automatic
updates OFF
(was set to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install
them")
Exit Automatic Update and control Panel

2) Wait 5 minutes

3) Go back to "Control Panel' and reverse what I just did.

4) Wait 5 minutes,

5) Reboot.

Now the log looks MUCH better, I think!
No ICON in tray
No error messages.
Last 13 hours of WindowsUpdate log show....
