Can not download MS updates

I have spent the weekend attempting to download MS updates. I thought my
computer was auto downloading all updates.... Seems as if I erred! The
Trojans et. al. have invaded and we have driven them back.... However, I
would like to put them all to bed by installing the last 2 years or so of MS
updates. Alas, I have not been able to find a way through the morass of
"fixes."

From what I have learned from the many posts out there, my problem may be
that I cannot convince my BTIS services entity to start! I go to this place
and select automatic or manual and click on "start" and the machine takes off
and then abruptly stops and tells me:
"Windows could not start BITS on local computer. For more information
review system event log. If this is a non- MS service contact service vendor
and refer to service specific error code 2147024891."
Cool... I check system event log and it is "started" and I cannot stop it
per the dialogue box! Is it a non MS vendor... I have not a clue. Is there
a clue that I do not see here?
If any of you out there have any idea as to where I should head next... I
would appreciate direction! Is this BITS stuff a red herring or is this the
key to the cave that holds the secret MS down loads?

I appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance,
Randy

There is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
