Can not install security updates. Keep getting constant errors.

I rebooted my computer about a week ago. Since then, I keep getting
Microsoft Errors. I go to the Windows Update page and click Express. It
says the updates are already downloaded and I click install. It then says
the updates were not installed successfully. The following is one of the
updates. Security Update for Windows XP (KB896423) I hope someone can
help. The computer has other problems that I hope are related to the update
problem. One of the other problems is when the computer turns on, it goes to
the desktop page and there are no icons or Start bar. Any help would be
appreciated. Jim

Locate on your hard disk the folder SoftwareDistribution\Downloads and
delete its content. Go to Windows Update again.
