can not load windows update ... and other problems

I am facing a series of stranges problems in XP ... when tyring to
access the windows updates (Tools ... Windows Update) I get a blank
screen ... the "search" functions does not work (when "clicking"
search I get nothing under the "Search Companion" compartment) and
also ie6 behaves in a strang manner. For example I have lost
functionality of some buttons in my yahoo mail (when clikcing
"compose" for example nothing happens).
I updated Java, run Norton utilities, uninstalled ServicePack2 (which
now when I try to install I get an error ...) but nothing seems to
work. Any ideas ???

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll

then reload the updatepage it should work now
