can not print from outlook, word or excel

Windows shuts down any of the above applications whenever I want to print.
The error message is something like: Microsoft (outlook, word or excel) has
encounted a problem and needs to shut down.

I'm running windows xp and I have installed the latest updates and I still
can't print
