I have windows 98 and am running the 7.0 version of msn messanger. It have
been working fine for about a month. But now it will not let me sign in. A
box will flash on the screen right after it fails to sign in but it vanishes
to quick to read it. I can sign in with the web messanger. I do not know what
is going on. Could really use some help.

Greetings,

It sounds like it's crashing. As a starting point have you tried uninstalling it from Add or
Remove Programs and reinstalling?

Hi,

It's hard to say when it just exists and disappears as there won't be any data to really know
what's happening.

Since it just started and I assume you've not added any new hardware or components (like a
webcam for instance), what you might try is renaming your Messenger contact cache. To do so,
assuming you're using the standard install options of Windows 98, go to the
\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft folder and rename the "MSN Messenger" folder to "Old MSN
Messenger".

Then restart Messenger and see if you can get it to work.

Sounds familiar to me. Mine started as soon as they updated me to "Live", I
could not get into 'Hotmail live' after signing in. ie. flashed then blank
screen, etc. It would mess up other sites too, until the browser was closed,
cookies deleted and reopened. I had upgraded to Explorer 6sp1 (8/25/07), a
month prior to my rollout 'Live" migration. I did notice older downloads of
6.0sp1 do access "Live" under Window 98SE , and so will Explorer 5.5sp1. I
was able to duplicate the problem on a couple of other PCs, just by doing the
6.0sp1 upgrade internet download (10/10/07 - 10/12/07). The problem isn't in
the patches, as I tried it each way. One time I went right from Explorer 4
on Windows 98SE right to Explorer 6sp1. That didn't matter. While I hated
to do it, I took the 6sp1 downoad from a third party site, on top of my
5.5sp1, which I had reverted back to. Note: the 'add remove programs
feature' would not let me remove 6.0sp1, only revert back to the prior
5.5sp1. Since the deactivated 6.0 sp1 files were still on the hard drive,
the new third party site download only took a few minutes, rather than an
hour. Everything works great now, for me. I hope this helps you, as I tried
to notify MS, but they aren't owning up to anything just yet. I suspect
there are some damaged or missing files in the current 6.0sp1 download from
the Windows update site, as it relates to Windows 98SE, or they were
eliminated on purpose. I went for the 'typical' full 14.5MB version each
time, not the custom install. I noticed the 6.0sp1 version 6.0.2800.110615
with upgrades Q918439, Q 916281, Q837109 and q313829 had worked great for
probably the last year, and gets into 'Live' just fine. The download from
the last month or so, that messes up "Live" is: 6.0.2800.1106IC with Q918439,
Q916281 and Q837009. I didn't check the number on the other two corruped
downloads I have, as this should be sufficent. KK
