Can not turn Automatic Update off...

I have just reformated my computer. I want to choose which update is to be
downloaded, but i am unable to turn off automatic update, the options are
grey and I can not change them. I am logged on as the Adminstrator and this
is a home PC on Windows XP pro

Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

If necessary:-

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok
