I updated my Ultimate system perfectly Tuesday. I tried to update my wife's
Business version today and have a mess. I restarted the computer, created a
restore point and launched Update. It listed the updates and I choose to
install them and after several minutes it was just hung on 3%. I realized my
cable connection had suddenly gone dead. Neither computer would connect to
the Internet. I clicked stop download on update and shutdown the computer. I
reset my cable, could get back online and tried again to update the computer.
The comouter just sits there with the hour glass spinning. I have tried
several times to no avail. All my restore points are gone.

Any suggestions would be grealy appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update
Services installation issues
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;906602

How to view the Update log in Windows

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error
code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If
appropriate copy
and paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist
you. On
the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions
by
searching the Newsgroup.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

Windows Update Checklist

Try renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type
%systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

You'll lose your update history but not important.
Run WU again and see if this makes a difference.

You can delete the old folder that you've renamed upon successful completion
of
updates.

I have worked on this for days. My first attempts after renaming the
Softwaredownload folder started to D/L immediately but would hang at 26%, 86%
and so on. When I stopped the D/L. l and restarted NOD32 would tell me it was
D/Ling. After a few days of this the system appears to be updated but I
cannot get my Office updates. I click to install additional updates and go
through the pages and prompts and it errors out with this;

Microsoft Update could not be installed on your computer

Make sure that you log on as an administrator or as a member of the
Administrators group, and then try again.

More troubleshooting options

If your computer is connected to a network and the problem persists, contact
your system administrator to see if your Microsoft Update settings are
managed using group policy.
If your computer is not connected to a network, or if your system
administrator has not disabled Microsoft Update, check if the Windows Update
service is disabled or stopped. To see how to start a service, search Help
and Support on your computer.

Note: If you experience problems with installing Microsoft Update, you can
continue to get updates for your computer by going to Windows Update in
Control Panel.

Please disable (or uninstall if you have to) all anti-virus, anti-spyware,
download accelerator, popup-blocker, or firewall on your PC before
attempting to use Microsoft Update. If you disabled a third-party firewall,
then re-enable Windows Firewall for the duration.

Now try Microsoft Update again.

I only have NOD32 and I turned it off to no avail. I didn't disable Defender
or it's pop-up-blocker. I left the Vista firewall on. That's all I use. At
this point I will try.

Thanks,

I realized after some more digging that the Business machine was only
conecting at 150kb instead of 4.1mb like my Ultimate. I called support. All
they had me do was uninstall the network card, restart and let it re-install.
Everything worked fine until I went to update and got the RealTek updated
driver. That driver sent it right back into the 3 digit kb mode. I knew what
had done it this time and rolled back the driver and all is well now. I went
back to my original SoftwareDistribution folder so I didn't lose anything.

Thanks again so much for all your help!
