Can only boot up in SAFE MODE (HELP!)

My PC has had this issue for about 3 weeks now. Ever since Windows Update
downloaded something some weeks ago, I haven't been able to log on without
going through SAFE MODE. The computer won't pass the Windows XP logo at all.
A week after the issue first began, it fixed itself, and I was able to log on
the regular way for that one day. When I logged off, the Automatic Update
came up again, downloading, I guess, the same thing it downloaded before,
that made the computer mess up. Again, I'm unable to access the computer the
regular way, and it hasn't fixed itself. What do I do without erasing my
documents????

I am having the same problem since downloading Windows Update last night.
Have you received a fix for this problem yet?
