First - to answer your question about the CD/DVD - unless you automate it
(or your friend does) - no. If you get your friend to download all the
updates and put them on a CD for you - it is just a bunch of files. You
have to manually run/install them one-by-one. Following the directions as
you do of each one (reboot, don't reboot, etc.) That is actually a bit
simplified (you technically could install most of the updates and not reboot
between them) - but is the safest way to update.
If you get your friend to make the many ISOs (approximately one per month
since January 2006) given in the first example in the following response -
then the process is a bit more simplified and you have WAY more than you
actually need (patches for operating systems you don't have.) However -
downloading EACH of these ISOs and burning them to CD may be something that
would be 'too much' for you to ask of a friend/relative. we are talking 20+
downloads of 200+MB each and then burning 20+ CDs to give to you. The
individual updates download option might be better - although the friend
will still have to click on all the links you send them by email/post on a
web page/etc... There are disadvantages all around. heh
I'd say the "Windows Updates Downloader" and burning them all to CD and then
you installing them one-by-one is the easiest for everyone.
Each month Microsoft releases that month's updates in ISO format:
January 2006-current
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086
If you are more trusting:
AutoPatcher
http://www.autopatcher.com/
Windows Updates Downloader
http://wud.jcarle.com/
You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.
How to use the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166
(In order to use the Windows Update Catalog, you must use IE to get the
patches..)
You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms##-***.mspx
At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.
As an example...
December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-dec.mspx
March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...
May 2006's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-may.mspx
January 2007's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-jan.mspx
Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.
