Can I read VHD without VirtualPC?

Hi,

I had a virtual PC in XP mode running on my desktop before a hard drive
failure. I did have a copy of the VHD but for some reason I can't open it.

I then tried mounting the VHD using Disk Manager in Windows 7 but kept
getting the message that I had to first format the hard drive.

Does this mean, the VHD is totally corrupted? Is that the reason why I can't
open it?

Is there a way to read the VHD or try to restore the data on it?

Thanks,

Sam
