I have just set up my account in my new lap-top (I have Vista Home Basic
version) with Windows Mail but seem to have a problem sending mail. I have
checked with my ISP and my in and out servers(pop.orangehome.co.uk and
smtp.orangehome.co.uk) are correct. I also have Outgoing mail server
authentication set to NO. Anything else I might need to check please ??

I have set these up the same as my XP Home PC which works fine so something
with Vista or firewalls here I suspect.

Are you at home, connected to Orange's network?

If you get an error message, right-click on it & select Copy. Then paste it
into a reply.

It's better to start your own thread, rather than to jump into an existing
one.
Who is your email account provider?

Please start your own thread, but this message means that you entered the
name of the server as "smtp" rather than using the real server name. It
won't know where to go.

Get the real server name from your ISP or mail provider.

Dave,
Thanks for the interest in my plight but I cannot paste into a reply. I have
Faststone Capture but the paste function is greyed out on the right-click
menu in this field.

My ISP says the servers should be :-

Incoming mail - pop.orangehome.co.uk
Outgoing mail - smtp.orangehome .co.uk
Outgoing server requires NO authentication

I cannot fathom how I can receive with "orangehome.co.uk" yet cannot send
with "orangehome.co.uk" I am not at my lap-top at the moment but will have a
look tomorrow.

But your laptop may not be connected to Orange.
That's the problem with laptops and wireless internet connections.
Your laptop may be connected to your neighbor's wireless router, and they
may be on a different network.
That network may let you access Orange's POP server, but not their SMTP
server.
The same is true if you take your laptop away from home.
You need to either use the SMTP server of the network you are connected to,
or see if Orange offers an authenticated SMTP server.

I see now Dave, my girlfriend uses Pipex for her Broadband connection and I
do indeed use Orange. I guess I will now make some enquiries with Orange and
see if I can find a way to send rom my lap-top via this ISP.

The workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute the SMTP
server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that route,
I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

This generally requires a 3rd party SMTP server, and gmail can be an
excellent - and free- choice for this.
