Ya' know? I wonder the same thing. Seems, one could fill up an entire hard
drive in just a short amount of time with all the updates that become
available and, are they REALLY that necessary? I got this computer, new, on
Christmas and, just in the short 10 days I've owned this computer, I've had
to download 32 of what Windows alleges are "critical" updates. At this rate,
by next year, I'll be about due for a new hard drive because this one will be
completely full of updates.
Now, with respect to your question, it seems that sometimes the updates will
allow you to remove them while, other times, they will not. I just updated an
optional hardware device that didn't seem to be working properly and tried
removing it from the Add/Remove Programs list and, although it claimed it had
removed it, it still appears in the list. Furthermore, apparently, it didn't
remove certain commands from the registry because, after removing the problem
device, I got an error message telling me a file was missing that the
computer, due to this program, is obviously looking for at startup. I had to
go into the Configuration utility and manually disable this feature in order
to no longer receive the error message everytime the computer boots up. Now,
I've got my registry full of crap I don't want, of which I don't specifically
know how to remove. Furthermore, it appears fragments of files associated
with the program are still on my computer of which I don't know if I dare
remove. These programs that don't completely uninstall everything it
INSTALLS, drive me batty.
If your computer gets so slow as to where it's nearly useless, you may
consider reinstalling your original Windows operating system and forget about
doing all the updates...or, maybe find out from someone with some expertise
with respect to this issue which ones are ABSOLUTELY necessary, and forget
about the rest. For example, if you've got Windows XP with Service Pack 1 and
you're given the opportunity to update to Service Pack 2, THIS you may want
to consider updating. But, other updates may not be as absolutely necessary.
