How can I safely install Vista?

I am going to install Viste Home Premium 32bit box for the first time and
have a question. When I installed Windows XP with the Internet cable
connected, the system by default caught virus/troyan preventing me from
using Network any more. The only solution was to install decent firewall
before connecting Internet cable (Ethernet). Is it the same way with
Windows Vista? Will it be safe to follow the following steps, or should I
have decent (other than built-in) firewall before connecting Internet
(Ethernet) cable? :
1. Installing Vista with Intrnet cable plugged-in
3. Automatically installing patches/updates from Internet from Microsoft
3. Installing anti-vir & firewall (I consider McAfee VirusScan Plus - it is
free and the package contains a firewall and anti-spam. I was also
considering Kaspersky Internet Security but I don't appreciate the need to
pay for licence every year)

Is above procedure safe, or before plugging Internet cable I should install
firewall other than the one built-in?

Any support welcome,
Marek

Safer way is to disable network connection, but it's not IMO a serious
danger.

It may be done this way.

No, you don't have to install any third party firewall software. System
firewall gives you a quite good level of security.

Might be an advantage. I've reinstalled and had the installer go online to fetch updates it
claimed would ease the installation process. Haven't had either the curiosity or the ambition
to do an A-B comparison install.

In that connection, I DID have Windows Update automatic updating gobble more than the
factory install of Vista could swallow, and leave Windows in a non-terminating loop of
rebooting, temporizing at the login screen while "processing updates," then forcing reboot.
After letting it have an all night seizure, and after getting no relief from Startup Repair,
System Restore, or a conservative reinstallation, I had to format the OS partition and become
the tech support dept. Eventually, recovery to better than status quo ante, 'though I never
managed to reinstall Symantec's Internet Security, which has the most user-hostile
error-handling I've ever seen. Thank dogs for AVG.
