can see available network but can't connect

I have a laptop running Vista Home Premium and an Apple Airport Extreme wireless router. It is possible to connect to the network from my wife's MacBook. But on the laptop, even though I can see the network listed in the list of available networks I cannot connect.
I select to network, pick Connect, enter the passphrase and then look at the scroll bar until it fails.

Is there anyone who might know what is required to get this to connect?

Success. I removed all security from the Airport Extreme. I was then able to connect to the network from the vista machine. I then enabled all security on the Airport again and I tried connecting from the laptop again, and it works.

However I am curious to know what turning security off and back on actually did.
