You can only schedule when Automatic Updates /installs/ updates that have
downloaded and are ready to be installed. See "Scheduling automatic
updates" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327838.
If you choose to leave Automatic Updates enabled, your best bet would be to
choose the Notify Only setting. With this setting enabled, you will have to
approve which updates are downloaded (but you can't control when they're
downloaded); furthermore, you will then have to approve which updates are
installed and when they're installed. Note that quite a bit of
communication between your computer and the update servers is involved even
when you're only installing updates.
However, you could choose not to approve the download of any updates, and
then install one or more of them manually via Windows Update website anytime
you want. This way you'll at least know when an update is available (versus
disabling Automatic Updates and remaining in the dark).
After installing the updates manually (and hiding any updates you choose not
to install*), Automatic Updates will quit nagging you & the icon will just
go away. <wink>
======================
* I would NOT recommend hiding any critical security updates.
