Did you have any beta versions of .NET Framework 3.0 installed on your
computer?

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/win.../bb188202.aspx
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Release Notes

Contents
1. System Requirements for Installing .NET Framework 3.0
2. .NET Framework 3.0: Installation Known Issues
3. Troubleshooting Steps for Download Errors
4. Windows Communication Foundation Known Issues
5. Windows Workflow Foundation Known Issues
6. Windows Presentation Foundation Known Issues

Note For best results, install on a computer that has not had any
pre-release versions of .NET Framework 3.0 installed on it. If your computer
has a pre-release version on it, you must remove it in the correct order to
ensure a clean uninstall. Follow these Uninstall Instructions to uninstall
the pre-release bits before installing this build. Please also reference
section 2.8 of this page for additional information about system with
pre-release versions of the Framework.

I have the same problem.
I have .net 1.1, 1.1 hotfix and 2.0 installed.
I do not have a beta version of .net 3 installed.
I have Norton Anti-virus 2007 and Comodo firewall installed. I disabled both
of them but was still unable to install .net 3.

I am very interested in in solutions to this problem.

I had the same problem, never had any beta version onboard, I also tried
installing via the dotnetfx3 redistributable without success. I found a
workaround - worked for me anyway.
1. Uninstalled .NET 2.0 and 1.1 with its hotfix.
2. Ran MS update custom and selected to install .NET 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 at the
same time.
3. Ran MS update 2nd time to install .NET 1.1 SP1 and the security updates
for 2.0 (KB917283,KB922770).
4. Ran MS update 3rd time to install .NET 1.1 security update (KB886903)
Hope it helps the rest, at least untill the glitch is fixed.

I fixed it the right way.
I did a google search on the error message and found a link to a Microsoft
article.
A key was missing from my registry. When I recreated it Microsoft Update
installed .net 3 correctly.
