I posted this in the windows 98 general newsgroup but no one responded
so I thought it might be more appropriate to post it here. Are hotfixes
still available for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows
Millenium.

End of support for Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows XP Service Pack 1

July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows
98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy.
Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security
updates, by this date.

Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be
available through the Microsoft Support Product Solution Center Web site.
This Web site will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to,
Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need
self-service.

Microsoft is retiring support for these products because they are outdated
and can expose customers to security risks. We recommend that customers who
are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade to a newer, more secure
Microsoft operating system, such as Windows XP, as soon as possible.

Thanks, I know this said that existing support will continue from the
website and I know the Windows Update site still works but can users
continue to request hotfixes for Windows 98SE from Microsoft.

"One would assume by reading the article "hotfixes" will not be continued."

If they are retiring support then they certainly are not going to continue
producing updates for Win98.

Well, if I need an existing hotfix for 98SE then I will call and see if
I can get it. Thanks for trying to help. I appreciate it.

You can download them from the Catalog and save to be installed later.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what
you want, Click the "Go To Download Basket" link. Type in or browse to the
location where you want the updates saved to and then Click the "Download
Now" button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

How to download updates and drivers from the Windows Update Catalog or from
the Microsoft Update Catalog

Translation: MS wants you to buy XP and is forcing you to do so by
cutting off support for 98/Me. Most people who are running 98/Me won't
know this so the Internet, thanks to MS' greed and total lack of concern
for their paying customers, will become less secure.

Let me see now - you own a 1998 Chev (WIN 98) and expect GM (Microsoft) to
retrofit side airbags,
anti lock brakes and stability control at no cost to you because they are
safer and are available
on current models (Win XP)???.
I don't think this is the world we inhabit.

Using your analogy ..... I have a 1994 car (Win98) & about 3 months ago I get a
letter from the manufacturers (Microsoft) about a safety recall (security
update) .... it was fixed for FREE!
So it does happen in the car industry at least.

Australia isn't "down under", it's "off to one side"!

My thoughts are that Microsoft is finally glad to retire the 9x source
code which includes Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows
Millenium edition, etc. I am disappointed that Microsoft is not willing
to sell the 9x source code to another company and let them compete with
Microsoft directly. Microsoft seems to do well with competition and
produce better products and that should help keep Microsoft free from
more lawsuits. As a user I will continue to dual-boot with 98SE and XP
PRO. since I need 98SE for my older programs that XP PRO. does not
support. I just hope that the antivirus, antispyware and firewall
companies keep supporting 98SE for several years at least.
