My friend has a lot of painful experience with malwares targeting IE. So he
decides to delete IE and switch to Mozzila firefox. So far so good.

However, can Windows be auto-updated without IE? If so, how? It seems by
using browsers other than IE people have to download the update package
manually, and will not be notified by the latest security issue...

Hi;

Using the Windows Update website requires that the IE be used. I'd
recommend that your friend re-install IE and keep it just for that purpose.
He can still use any other browser he wants for regular "stuff."

As for whether AutoUpate will work without IE, in general the answer is yes.
But it does depend on how drastic your friend was when he deleted IE --- did
he also delete a bunch of the IE-related support files, for instance?
Assuming all your friend did is delete the one .exe file; then AU should
still work and should still notify him when Critical/Security updates are
available via AU.

Again, I'd recommend he undo the IE deletion and just ignore IE until he
needs to visit the WU website.
