Can WLM be set up to run on a LAN without accessing the internet?

Hello,

I'm looking for video conference or call software that will allow me to
video chat between computers in my house on the same ethernet network. I
don't want the software to have to go out to the internet and back since that
would not be as efficient and clean as traveling only across my house.

Can WLM do this? If not, is there any other software that you could recommend?

Thanks!
David

Greetings Daniel,

Nope, you need to connect to the .NET Messenger Service, it does not run locally.

Microsoft does provide a Live Communications Server and a client for that, but since this is
for you house obviously you don't want that bother.

LanTalk XP is a decent choice for what you're looking for:
http://www.lantalk.net/lantalk-xp/

There's plenty of other freeware to do this though.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for the reply.

I checked out LanTalk XP but it doesn't look like it does video. Do you have
any other software suggestions?

I have heard that NetMeeting can be run on an intranet without going outside
but I haven't confirmed that yet.

Thanks again,
David

Hi David,

Sorry, I must've zoned out when you said you wanted video. My apologies.

Netmeeting will work, but the quality isn't too great. There's also some Microsoft Research
projects like ConferenceXP or Microsoft Portrait that do these things too, but they're not
really intended for full time use.

Don't really have any other particular suggestions, seems everything I use nowadays connects
in one way or another to the public network.

Hi Jonathan,

I haven't used a video chat client so I don't really know what the quality
is like. Is NetMeeting's quality better or worse than WLM or any of the other
available video chats? If there is no real difference then I might as well
just get a widely used and supported program instead of using NetMeeting.

Thanks again!
David

Hi,

Well locally it'll be "okay" performance-wise, but the actual quality of the video won't be
stellar or amazing. The last version of Netmeeting is about 8 years old now and technology
behind it hasn't changed in probably a few years more than that. A lot has changed in
digital video since then.
