canceling update breaks

yesterday auto update downloaded 13 updates waiting for me to ok it, so I ok
it
after it installed 3 updates, I wanted to shutdown, so I click cancel, and
it says "canceling" during the install for office 2003 update
It took a long time; i decided to leave the computer on and go to sleep.

That was 8 hours ago. This morning when I woke up was still "canceling".
So I select shutdown. During shutdown, it says applying windows update 3 of
13, do not turn off...
after 15 minutes, it is still saying the same thing with no progress

so I turned of the PC and reboot

now when I go to windowsupdate in the browser's help menu, it shows that the
office 2003 update was canceled. how do i get it back?

what happened to the other 10 updates? I did not get prompted to install
them anymore
