Hi;

Possible virus infection? See
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;812340

Or do you have the IME? see
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;843551 for help on
that one.

Or did you recently have an encounter with McAfee AV of the ugly kind? See
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;318012 for help on
that.

If none of the above match, please try to open Control Panel again, and this
time copy down the exact error message you see. Then post back here with
that info.

My apologies form not responding sooner. I tried the anti virus and it seems
ok. I also do not get an actual error message only a report will be sent to
Microsoft. Sometimes the control panel comes up and responds for two or three
attempts then freezes again. This only happens post SP 2 and when I removed
SP2 the control panel responded satisfactory.
Any help would be appreciated.

Next time you get that, click Details then copy down the first 5-10 lines.

How did you install SP2? Was it from a download or from MS AutoUpdate or
from a CD or ...???

I'm having the same problem. When I try to access Control Panel I get a
message that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down.
Sorry for the inconvenience." When I then click on "Send Error Report" a
microsoft web page comes up saying that there is no known fix for this
problem.

My problem began after I tried to install KB888162. (Note: I appear to have
successfully install SP2 with the only problem being that my computer takes
longer now to start-up.) I have tried installing KB888162 by clicking on the
automatic update icon in my system tray. I have also tried installing it
through the MicroSoft website. The results are the same. During the
installation process it hangs and I get a message that the installation was
unsuccessful...my system may be unstable...I should uninstall the service
pack." At the same time the installation continues and tells me that the
installation was successful. A curious contradition. When I attempt to
uninstall KB888162 I realized I could no longer access Control Panel.
However, I got to add/remove programs through "Set Program Access and
Defaults." I removed KB888162 but am still unable to access Control Panel.
I have repeated this scenario at least 8 times today, and 4 or 5 times 4 days
ago. All with the identical results.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can 1)regain access to the Control Panel,
and 2)successfully install KB888162.

Hi;

From the sounds of things, I'd suggest you follow the steps in the article
at http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;888162.

(Note that there doesn't seem to be an actual KB888162 to install, so I'm
unclear about how you saw that in AU or WU; it is just an article to fix
issues with SP2 and KB834707.)
