Cannot access internet after windows update 6/27

My new laptop has Vista and before shutting down the system installed 2
updates, Vista update KB31836 and definition update for Windows defender
KB915597 definition 1.19.2726.3. I would imagine the latter is just a
spyware update for defender and problem is related to the vista update.

When I shut down the system it was accessing the internet just fine via cat5
on my home Linksys router. In the morning it did not show being plugged into
network, despite my desktop connecting normally. I took the laptop to work
and could not access the wireless router, even though my co-worker's laptop
was accessing on XP just fine. When I tried to diagnose the problem it had
me change my tcp settings to no avail, I checked all security settings,
firewalls etc but none of my setting had changed. It shows a wireless
network as available but will not send or receive any information to and from
the router.

The only change to the laptop has been the installation of both updates upon
shutting down the laptop on 6/27. Any ideas?

KB931836 is the time zone update for the change in daylight savings
time. I doubt that would affect connectivity. Have you tried
uninstalling it, rebooting the system, and then see if it can connect ?

This oddly enough fixed the problem. How would that kind of update cause
that I wonder. There were no other variables in my opinion that caused the
change.

To be blunt, I have no idea how that would break connectivity.
Since the system could not connect via the NIC nor the wireless card I
fail to see any commonality.
AFAIK, in Vista the only file involved is Tzres.dll.mui
There are changes made to the registry, but I fail to see how that would
break connectivity.
This is interesting:

That's rather cryptic, isn't it ? Try the 'Daylight Saving Time Update
Guide' and see if that reveals anything.
