I have just added a Vista PC to my home network.,

I have changed some folders including the Documents folder on the
Vista system to enable file sharing and allowed everyone full control
(via advanced sharing/share permissions).

When I go the Vista system from either of the 2 XP Pro systems I can
see all the folders I have selected to share.

But when I try to open them I get the message

\\Main\Documents is not accessible You might not have permission to
use this network resource etc..... It is the same for all folders I
chose to share.

I can't see anything I have missed.

I never had this problem on XP.

Any help appreciated.

You need to check on the Vista computer whether your network is a
Private network, or a Public Network. "Public Network" is more secure
and could be preventing access.

You can change the type of network your Vista machine uses as follows:

- Click the Windows Pearl (formerly know as the Start Button)
- Right-Click Network and select Properties
- Click Customize and then select Private NetworkThat should work, and has the advantage of not requiring the same
usernames and passwords.

My Vista PC is setup to be a "Private Network". Whenever I need to
access its shared folders from another PC on the network (whether it is
from a Vista or XP computer), the client pc pops up with a login asking
for a username and password. I then enter my usual Vista logon
credentials. I then have access to the shared folders.

Can both computers see each other? i.e Are they on the same workgroup,
such as WORKGROUP or MSHOME?

Try using the same login name and password on both machines. For
example, if you use "Mary" as a username and "password" as a password to
login the Vista machine, try setting up the same user name and password
on the XP Machine. It may also be that you are not using passwords at
all. I've had problems with XP before where for some obscure reason if
you don't have a password on the user account (whether it's an
adminstrative or limited account) then you could not access the network.

Also check that both computers are using similar IP address and Subnet
Mask configurations by opening a command prompt and typing IPCONFIG (use
WINKEY+R, type CMD to open a command prompt). The computers on my
network use "192.168.1.x" for IPs and "255.255.255.0" for Subnet mask,
where "X" is a unique number for each computer, starting from 1. The
subnet mask must be the same for all the computers.

Have a read of the above link.

Make sure workgroups on all comps are the same.

In vista Network and Sharing:
1. you have set network to private: correct.
2. file sharing: on.
3. public folder(XP's Shared docs!) sharing: on
4. network discovery: on.
5. password protected: off(personal choice that works for me). Otherwise you
are asked for a password when you try and access Visat fromXP

In XP machines, also run the Network file sharing wizard again, when all are
turned on, and in the network.
