every time i try to update windows, the link to the update page fails to load
up, and i get the "page cannot be displayed error". i have absolutely no idea
what has happened. i recently had to reinstall windows xp on my system due to
a hard drive copy error, but everything seemed to install fine with no
complications or errors. can anybody help me?
this is the only page that this happens, other than the occasional mishap
when navigating the internet.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

could be:
win update page display error

This may occur if Service Pack 1 has been removed from the computer either
through System
Restore or by reinstalling Windows XP into the same directory. You may see
a page that states that the Web page has an unexpected error or cannot
display the page that was requested.

The value for the CSDVersion in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Windows
needs to be changed to 0. If you are comfortable editing the registry,
follow the instructions below.
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. In the Open box type regedit and click "OK."
3. Browse in the left frame to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Windows
4. In the right frame you will see the key CSDVersion. Double click this key.
5. Change the value to 0 and click "OK."
6. Restart the computer.

none of those worked. i noticed that several of them mention a
"windowsupdate" folder in program files, and i have found no file by that
name. should i just request a cd copy of the update, or does anybody out
there know how i can fix this.
just to reiterate, i don't get any sort of windows update error at all, it's
just that when i go to access the windows update page, the page fails to load
and i get the typical "this page cannot be displayed" message that usually
appears from a bad link.

Hi there, perhaps try:

https in front of the update site address instead of the normal http address.
See if that makes a difference.

Doesn't hurt to order the CD for the updates either.

Most of the confusion in this thread is due to the lack of information
that you have provided. We don't know the version of your OS
or the version of Windows Update you are trying to use.
The suggestions so far assume that it is WUv4. There could be
redirects to WUv5 in a best case but you could also try bypassing
them at least as a diagnostic step.

What is the URL that you are unable to access?

Look for more clues in the *Update.log files under %windir%

dcj666,
In one of the replies they added a link to a possible fix from Microsoft.
The fix you are looking for is there but with a slight alteration. Under
Internet Options, click Connections then LAN Settings then Advanced. Under
the Exceptions, add the following sites without the HTTP or the HTTPS.

Windowsupdate.microsoft.com; V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com;
Download.Windowsupdate.com;V5.Windowsupdate.micros oft.com

This fixed it for me.
