I am running Windows XP SP3 Home Edition on 1 of 4 PC's and it's been
updated through early April 2011. Prior to this, accessing Windows Updates (via http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind....aspx?ln=en-us) worked fine, near perfect, for over a year - using Internet Explorer 6. Note, I prefer not upgrading to Internet Explorer 8 - so please avoid suggesting same - read below to understand why. Recently, around the middle of April 2011, each time I went to Windows Update, the page initially appears and I can briefly see the 2 buttons (of which I always chose the CUSTOM button), but within 1/2 second, the screen blinks and resolves to state "New! Get Microsoft Update today!" I have no interest in Microsoft Update for my PC running XP SP3 Home Edition because my other 3 PC's, all running Windows XP SP3 Professional with Internet Explorer 6 are having no problems with Windows Update. This is also why I prefer not upgrading to Internet Explorer 8 on my PC running XP XP3 Home Edition. Because my 3 PC's running XP Professional XP3 are not having problems accessing Windows Update with Internet Explorer 6, it seem reasonable to conclude that this is an XP SP3 Home Edition problem. Or, perhaps its an Internet Explorer 6 where some setting has changed. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Internet Explorer 6, but the problem remains. I tried all DEFAULT settings, and the problem remains. I cannot successfully access Windows Update to update my PC running Windows XP SP3 Home Edition and I want to fix this problem. Any help or suggestions are sincerely appreciated. Thank you. AnnaG |

* Does Automatic Update function on this system or do you exclusively use Internet Explorer to obtain Windows Updates ? * Please try another attempt to access Windows Update using IE 6. If/when this fails, close Internet Explorer. Copy and paste at least the *last* 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log into your reply, please - How to read the Windowsupdate.log file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093 MowGreen ================ *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten ================ "Security updates should *never* have *non-security content* prechecked AnnaG wrote: > I am running Windows XP SP3 Home Edition on 1 of 4 PC's and it's been > updated through early April 2011. While I do not know what to look for, after a brief comparison between
XP SP3 logs, one line stands out . . . Retrieved 1 persisted download jobs. I do not know what this means, so I checked the HISTORY. The status of the last 190 updates all show GREEN checkmarks. I have to go back to October 17, 2010 to find one RED X and that update was resolved later the same day. After every update or whenever I finish using IE6, I always delete all cookies in the TIFF, and delete all files in the TIF - including all offline content, and I clear History. As a check, I ran WU a 2nd and 3rd time and the same 50 lines appear unchanged, including . . . Retrieved 1 persisted download jobs. Hopefully, to you, MowGreen, there is something more obvious that needs correcting. Thank again. |

I see nothing that indicates an updating issue in those and the subsequent entries you posted from the WU.log. FWIW, you can set AU to " Notify " you about updates via the Automatic Updates applet in Control Panel and NO updates can be downloaded nor installed until you Approve them. For the Services, BITS can be set to Manual when you use IE to access Windows Update. At that time, when I first saw them, I posted to the MSWU newsgroup and the replies I received from MS-MVP's was simple - they can be ignored, they are meaningless, they have no bearing on your machine or WU's. At that time, when I first saw them, I posted to the MSWU > newsgroup and the replies I received from MS-MVP's was simple - they > can be ignored, they are meaningless, they have no bearing on your > machine or WU's 0x80080008 CO_E_SERVER_STOPPING Object server is stopping when OLE service contacts it Whomever informed you that this return code is meaningless is incorrect, Anna. The BITS service ( DM, which stands for Download Manager)is failing to download updates. However, it will download updates if an interface (BITS) is Started *after* this entry appears. The AU service tries more than once to establish the interface (BITS). I suggest you try setting the AU service to Automatic *and* open the AU applet in Control Panel and set that to Turn automatic updates off. Set BITS to Manual in the Services console. Then reset Windows Updates components by downloading and *saving* the Fixit on this page - How do I reset Windows Updates components ? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 When the download completes close *all* open programs and browsers. Run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi and choose it's Default mode. When the Fixit has finished running restart the system and see if the MU notice appears when visiting the WU web site. NOTE: By doing the above the Windows Update history you see on the WU web site will no longer be present. You can preserve it, if needed, by copying DataStore.ebd from Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore to another location. However, there is the possibility that DataStore.ebd is corrupted or damaged and that's why your system is receiving the MU notice when hitting the WU web site. It's your choice but, please note that the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is updated each month and is aimed at the most prevalent malware according to data sent to Microsoft from infected computers. It's an extremely worthwhile to have the Tool scan an XP system at least once a month since XP is *easily* the most exploited OS. At the very least, running the MRT can detect hidden malware ( a root kit or root-kit like ) that is installed by one of the continually emerging Rogue Security 'Programs', such as the ones listed here - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/ It may not be able to remove them in all cases but it does a fine job detecting and sometimes, neutering this type of malware, so that it can be removed with Malwarebytes Anti-malware or another malware removal tool specifically aimed at Rogue 'Programs'. You're mowst welcome and I'm glad to hear that updating is working as *you* want it to.
