Windows XP sp 3, Media Center Edition 2002
Sony VAIO

I saw an error message about this for MCE 2005, but can't find it for MC
2002:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;902165, "You Receive
a 'Device in Use' Error"

This article says to turn off the Media Center Receiver Service, but I don't
have that in MCE 2002.
I've turned off the services Media Center Scheduler Service, Sony TV Tuner
Manager, and Sony TVTA Manager.

The services still running are VAIO Entertainment File Import, VAIO Media
Integrated Server, and VAIO Media Video Server.

I've done a search for that error message for MCE2002, but Bing can't find
it.

What would be the steps in MCE 2002 to stop the TV Tuner, or to address the
issues in the error message.(which is stated in full in the KB article
referenced above)?

Thank you.

In general,
when I'm tracking to track down a "'Device in Use' Error", I disable the
device in device manger , then look in event log to see "what is
complaining". THAT app is the one that's " using your card".

First, you couldn't have Media Center 2002 with SP3, if your system
originally had MCE 2002, then applying the sp2 (or sp3) would have
automatically upgraded you to MCE 2004. However, if you bought your system
anytime in the last four years or so, then you MCE 2005. The proper place to
check for the MCE version is in the MC interface, Setting, General, About.

Could you provide some more info, when are you getting this error? Are you
trying to run a 3rd party video capture app or is that occurring in MC?

Most of the MC services are named "eh..." and there should be a ehReceiver
service running if you have set up MC. Are you checking in the "Services"
applet to disable services or just in the startup stuff?

Correction on the version. It's MCE 2004, version 5.1
Thanks for redirecting me to this data bit

I am using Click to DVD, which came with the computer. It puts the analog
input onto a DVD.
Click to DVD initializes, recognizes the data coming in, and starts the DVD
for output, but then after a few seconds I get an error message that says:
"Cannot capture from the analog device because an error has occured, the TV
tuner may be in use by another program. Either wait until TV recording is
finished or exit the TV recording program, then start capturing."

As I said, I tried turning off Media Center Scheduler Service, Sony TV
Tuner Manager, and Sony TVTA Manager.

When I go into the Task Manager, I don't see any tasks that start with "eh".
Normally, I do, so they must be the ones I turned off.

I went into the Services Applet and stopped them.

I tried using MovieMaker, but MovieMaker doesn't recognize that any analog
data is
coming in.

So, I'm trying to find out if indeed, there really is some TV app that is
going on in the background, or if this is a bad error message, i.e. giving
me wrong information.

You might try telling MC not to start with Windows (if you have it doing
this) and temporarily disabling the MC services (with the Services app),
then reboot and retry. (make sure you remember what you disable, so you can
reset it to Automatic later)

If you still get the error, try going into Event Viewer (Control Panel,
Administrative Tools) and see if you have any error that have more info.

What model Sony TV turner do you have?
Have you tried to use the application that came with it to capture incoming
video?

I don't know what model Sony TV tuner I have. I've never used it - I've
never even set it up. I went into the list of hardware in the System folder,
but didn't see anything that looked like it might be a tuner card.

Part of the reason, besides the fact that I don't watch TV, is that the
media center is designed to be a server for a home network. I'm just using
this one desktop machine, and I can't get beyond the point where it insists
that I register my computer with the other VAIO Media computers, which,
being a stand-alone, I don't want to do. It says to select the server, but
there are no servers on the list to select from. When I try to cancel out
of this operation, I get an error message, and I get asked if I want to tell
Microsoft about it. Then I cancel the program.

I'm not sure how to go about recording TV. I don't even know if I'm set up
for it.
