Cannot Change Automatic Update Setting

Hi,

I am making a second post regarding the same problem:

I wish to receive Automatic Updates from Microsoft Update, but cannot change
the current settings via the Control Panel / Automatic Updates. The
Automatic Update Page is shaded.

I was refferred to article KB327850 of the Microsoft Knowledge Base which
linked me to article 328010: Configuring Automatic Updates By Using Local
Group Policy.

I followed the steps as indicated in article 328010. Upon returning to the
Control Panel, the new setting was not reflected. Additionally, I expected
to see the green balloon at the bottom of the desktop screen - but it did not
appear either.

Can anyone tell me how to detrmine if the group policy configuration worked?

I am having a few headaches as I was gifted this computer and the settings
were set by someone else. I am working on Windows 2000 Professional with NT
Technology - Service Pack 4. This computer was previously part of a
corporate network, but the previous staff member worked from a remote
location not the headquarters. I have what appearsto be local administrator
full access, but I still cannot change some settings which were placed by the
overall corporate administrator.

I look forward your assistance and suggestions. Have a great day!

In correcting the same problem, I found in this group that there are a lot of
causes and solutions - but the tweak below worked perfectly for me. A post
from Thorgeir also confirmed that it works for Win 2000. Good luck!

" One of the causes of 'greyed' out automatic update selections appears to be
the new Windows Update verification tool install. When I authorized it, my
automatic updates were no longer accessible. The tweak provided at:

Windows Update Greyed Out - Restore (Line 179)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

works just fine to resolve the problem "

Hi Rob7,

Thank you so much for your assistance and taking the time to reply. I will
try your recommendation later this evening. It is funny how Thorgeir is a
part of this solution. I attempted to e-mail him at the address under his
profile, but it bounced back.

A Microsoft Support Agent turned me on to this site. This is an incredible
resource - and a refreshingly kind and witty community.

Peace out,

Thanks for the kind words - I've also found this forum very helpful. I
strongly recommend doing a system restore ckpt (if available in W2000) or a
full backup prior to running the registry fix from Kelly - my nerves get bad
when messing with the registry. HTH.

Hello Rob7,

In your second post you suggested setting a restore check point or back-up
prior to running the tweak. After copying the tweak to CD, I was not certain
about the next step, so I called the IT Professional from my previous
employer. He is away on business, but will help me run the program late next
week. I will let you know how we make out in the end. Obviously, I am not a
techie, but I am learning a few things here.

Be well.
