All the choices in the Automatic Updates in the Windows Update applet in
Control Panel are grayed out. It is set to Automatic (recommended). I cannot
select any of the other 3 (Download, Notify, Turn Off)

Does anybody know how to repair this? I've tried uninstalling SP 2 but no go.

Thanks

Are you running as an Administrator?
Are you on a stand-alone computer or in a Domain?

The information is provided "as is", it is suggested you research for
yourself before you take any advice - you are the one ultimately
responsible for your actions/problems/solutions. Know what you are
getting into before you jump in with both feet.

Yes, my login has administrator control. I am running a stand-alone XP Pro,
not joined to a domain.

Mine is stuck on download updates for me (the second choice). Everything else
is greyed out and I want to shut them off.

I have a personal laptop, so I imagine I should be the administrator.

Help please!

Make an Registry change.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\WindowsUpdate
or
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\WindowsUpdate
In the right-hand pane, delete "DisableWindowsUpdateAccess" or change
the value to 0.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\WindowsUpdate\AU
Highlight the subkey "AU" and delete.
