Cannot change Display Name or Personal Message

I am fed up with Microsoft Support. I have had to explain myself to at least
30 different support staff, having to repeat myself over and over again, and
receiving answers that I already told them do not work. How are they supposed
to help me with absolutely no continuity? And what is it with those generic
replies. It seems like half of them didn't even read my mail.

Anyway, here's my problem. I have been unable to change my Display Name or
Personal Message in Live Messenger. It simply shows my e-mail address, and I
can't change it. When I login using MSN 7.5, my display name defaults to my
first name, and while I can change it, it doesn't save, so next time I login
it reverts to my first name. If I login using Live Messenger, it reverts to
my e-mail address. It happens on all computers. What on earth is the problem,
and how would I go about getting Microsoft to fix it for me?

G'day Jay,

With regards to the email address you're using, is it a non-hotmail
(@hotmail.com) or a non-msn (msn.com) email address?

If it isn't, have you registered it properly for a Passport/Windows Live ID?
After registering it, you'll be a sent an email where you click a special
URL in it to make sure the address does belong to you. If you don't do this,
you'll STILL be able to sign in, but you WON'T be able to change your
display nickname etc.

This happened to me once, turns out my email provider was blocking the email
with the activation URL in it.

I've also heard this happens WITH @hotmail.com and @msn.com addresses, if
you don't check your inbox and it gets deactivated. I haven't actually
experienced this so it's probably a rumour, but something you might want to
try nevertheless.

Cheers

Matt,

Thanks, but I don't think that's the problem. This Passport account has been
active since 2001, and I've had no problems with it until recently, when I
switched to Live Messenger final. Ironically, I had no problems with the beta.

Greetings Jay,

Let's try one last thing. Log into your account using the http://webmessenger.msn.com, and
then attempt to change your name there (just click on it, similar to the mac version of
Messenger if you've used that).

Dear Jonathan,

Thanks for your suggestion. I've actually tried that as well. It works fine
on Web Messenger, but like on 7.5 it never saves. It always reverts to my
first name on the next login. And it reverts to my mail if I try on Live
Messenger.
