Cannot check updates

I have Windows XP Home, Microsoft Office 2003, and Internet Explorer 7. When
I go to Start, Windows Update, I am taken to Microsoft Update. When I click
on Express or Custom for updates, I get a message “Checking for the latest
updates for your computer”, but nothing immediately happens. Eventually, I
get a message that the program is not responding. I click End Now and/or
Cancel and nothing immediately happens. Eventually, the program closes. All
of the Options on the left side of the screen are hyperlinked, and I can
click on them and get results, with the exception of Restore hidden updates,
which is not hyperlinked and does not do anything. I need help. Thank you,
Robert

See if you have the same problem on the WU site
opt-out of Microsoft Update, go to the Microsoft Update homepage and choose "Change
Settings", scroll down the page until you see the option to "Stop using Microsoft Update"
and select the "Disable Microsoft Update software.." Checkbox and click "Apply changes
now"

Check for Office updates manually.

Thank you for your response. Windows Update site works fine. I cannot get
any manual downloads from Office 2003 because I cannot get Microsoft Office
Genuine Validation ActiveX Control to install. At the present time I have no
ActiveX relating to Windows or Microsoft showing in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded
Program Files. Can you get me past this hurdle? Thank you, Robert

Thank you for the help. I was successful in downloading and installing the
Office updates that I was lacking. I was able to get the required ActiveX
control installed by opening Security under Internet Options and resetting
the Custom levels to Default settings.
