Cannot complete Windows Update

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to update my system using Windows update, but
when I choose either "Express Install" or "Custom
Install", Windows update will tell me that it's scanning
my system for possible updates, but it stays like that
indefinitely. If I try to refresh my browser or close the
browser window, the whole computer hangs or crashes.

Any help will br greatly appreciated...

I'm using Windows XP Media Centre Edition with Service
Pack 1.
