cannot conect to internet after installing SP2

ok strange one and greatfull for any help

after installing SP2 i dont seem to be able to connect to the internet via
my usb wireless connection the dongle is working and infact windows conferms
it is connected (ie i can speak to the router and see that it is working
correctly, it has signed in and is speaking to the web) and shows signal
strengh etc but if i open IE i get the not conected error,this is also the
same with mail and any other programs, apart from fault reporting which seems
to be connecting and sending quite happly

forgot to add XP home and i have only just installed from scratch due to a
hard drive failure (macanical not software)
