Cannot connect with dial up internet connection

Dial up was working fine but suddenley it won't connect. It dials up, goes to
authorisation and then disconnects. All I get is an error that comes up
saying "Error during connection 6". I have tried reinstalling the isp, even
tried a different isp but that hasn't worked. I have even changed the
internal modem but that doesn't change the error.
Can anyone help?
