Hello all!
I'm running XP home SP1, I did a repair install last week which went smoothly and cured my problem, but it seems that I have a new one. I cannot connect to the Windows update site all other sites I have no problem with including Microsoft.com but when I try to access https://windowsupdate.microsoft.com IE starts to connect but then it will "lock up" (freeze) on me and I have to close it with "task manager."
I've also tried to connect by using hyperlinks at Microsoft.com, shutting down various security programs and checking for entries in the "hosts file" and just now as I was writing this I checked the "downloaded programs folder" and found that the active x control for "WUWebcontrol class" was damaged and was unable to update it so I deleted it believing that it would be reinstalled, still no joy. This system is parasite free.
I admit defeat on this one and can use a little help. :-)

Mike,

Check the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS folder. Scroll down
towards the bottom for the most recent entries. Post any error code
associated with the last failed attempt to access WU into your response.

A slight miscomunication here my C:/Windows/WUtemp. folder is empty, I'm
assuming
that the log file would be here? Also I've just finished following all of
the steps here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818018/en-us#E0RB0ACAAA
still a no-go.

The WINDOWS directory, not subfolders of it.

C:\WINDOWS

The WUTemp folder is not used in the V6 of Windows Update.

Thanks for your interest MowGreen, I figured this out, I looked at my
wifes laptop for the log file you suggested and found it easily enough, I
counldn't find it on my system then it dawned on me that that file
"WindowsUpdate.log" was deleted when I did the repair install along with all
other system logs (event viewer and system restore points prior to the
reinstall do not exists) and since I could not reach the WU site the log
file was not recreated. I don't know why WU was so difficult to connect to
no other site was but I just let IE look for the site and after about 30
minutes (with broadband) the page came up. Must be the ghost in the machine.
