Cannot continue with update process

Even after DOING the requested steps indicated to correct the services, I
still get the below message every time. How can I update Windows?


The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:

Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install
high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more
quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with
troubleshooting, if needed)

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

Including details such as the edition of Windows you're referring to
helps those who would like to help you.
I'm guessing this is probably Windows XP since the update service is
referred to as Automatic Updates.

Specifically, what is the installed antivirus/security suite ?
Is it's subscription and virus definitions current ?
When was the last time the system was scanned for the presence of malware ?
